The Second Life Of Mirielle West by Amanda Skenandore

Location: Louisiana Type: Ebook

Timeline: Linear Genre: Fiction

Narration: 3rd person

Review:

Stars: 4

Hollywood socialite turned leper. A life ripped from her in a moment. Is there life again for a leper?

The author does a great job bringing life to these characters and emotion into their circumstances. I have never personally been effected by someone with leprosy but this book makes my heart break for those who have.

This would make a fantastic book club book. There are a lot of talking points and opportunities to share our own experiences. It also has few triggers, low amount of language, and no sex. Should be an easy group pleasure read mixed with some education.

Questions:

Mirielle found out her diagnosis in the newspaper instead of from the doctor.

How would this make you feel?

How would you react?

Have you known someone diagnosed with leprocy?

How did their treatment differ from Mirielles?

While Mirielle was in Carville jail she received a letter and drawing from her family.

How would you feel if you received that same letter and drawing from your family?

What is your opinion of Jean in the beginning?

Does your opinion change by the end of the story?

If so, why?

The magazines said Mirielle was in a mental institution instead of a leper colony.

Which place do you think would be worse?

Which would hurt her reputation more?

Did the fact that it was said to be a mental institution, instead of something else, say anything to you?

When Mirielle heard dirt being thrown on Hector's coffin she starts to dry heave.

Why do you think she had this response?

How do you think Mirielle felt when she found out that Charlie started the rumor of her being in a mental institution?

How do you think it changed her outlook on recovery and Carville?

Mirielle had the opportunity to help with a trial treatment study. There are many risks that come with the slight chance of the treatment working.

Why do you think Mirielle was so eager to sign up?

How do you think her children would feel if they knew she was participating in experimental treatments?

Would you (or have you) ever participate in an experimental treatment process?

Do you think Frank and Mirielle are a good match?

Why or why not?

Why did Irene kill herself?

Why did she not just stay at Carville instead?

What made Mirielle reveal her true name to Frank after Irene died?

Do you believe that Mirielle tested positive again because of Frank?

Why or why not?

Once a leper, always a leper.

People will always treat you like your diseased even with a clear bill of health.

Can you think of any diseases today that are treated like that?

Why do you believe people act this way?

Sister Verena was less than kind to Mirielle from the beginning. Yet towards the end she seems to have changed toward Mirielle.

Why do you think that is?

Share your thoughts on Mirielle choosing Jean over Helen.

Why do you think she did that?

What does that say about Mirielle?

Was it the right decision?

Do you think Jean's father is as cold hearted as he was first portrayed or did he do what was best for his family at the risk of breaking his own heart?

What are your thoughts of Charlie?

Did your opinion of him change throughout the story?
