Review:

Stars: 5

Simone St. James is masterful with her ability to keep me guessing while adding a spooky element. This book had me watching my back at night. The characters were relatable and I found myself routing for justice. I'm still not sure I found it though.

This would make a great book club book if the members can handle the scary elements.

Questions:

"The person who could truly be alone, in the company of no one but oneself and one's own thoughts - that person was stronger than anyone else. More read. More prepared."

What are your thoughts? Do you agree?

Are you comfortable alone, truly alone?

Why do you think the author chose to write Viv's part in 3rd person but Carly's in 1st person?

Does it add or take away from the story?

Viv said "for the first time in her life, it occurred to her how erasable she was."

Have you ever felt erasable?

What does that mean?

When Viv talks to Marnie for the first time they discuss the Betty Graham case. Marnie said that when Betty was killed all the girls in the area "were Betty". They locked doors, watched their backs and were extra cautious for a time.

Has there ever been a case in the news where you reacted similarly?

Why that case over all the others?

Carly and Heather meet with Marnie but Marnie denies knowing Viv.

Why do you think Marnie lied? (with the knowledge you have up to this point in the book)

Carly liked looking at Marnie's photos from the spot they were taken and see the similarities and differences.

Have you ever been able to do this?

Please share your experience.

Did the connection to Callum surprise you?

If not, what gave it away?

Do you think his flirtation toward Carly was genuine or was it part of an act to get close to her?

After Viv killed Simon Hess she had to turn her back on her old life forever.

What would be the hardest part of turning away from your life? (no spouse or kids since Viv did not have them)

Viv turned herself in with a confession.

Do you think the police would have figured out it was her if she hadn't?

Was it fair (or just) for Viv to serve the rest of her life in jail for murdering Simon Hess?

Was it murder, a killing (man slaughter), or self defense?

Do you think the ghosts (Betty, Henry, the boy) got closure?

Why or why not?
