I read many different genres. I have few sensitivities while reading. But when I speak with other ink drinkers I have discovered many different triggers or aversions people have while reading. I try to note some key things that have come to my attention. I am always up for hearing others you would like me to add to my analysis. Keep in mind that not every book is analyzed the same. I may have read the book before adding certain criteria that I now follow. And as you provide me with further triggers or aversions I can continue to add to the reviews.
Demographics:
I will try to provide the location in which the story is set (state or country), the timeline (linear or non linear), Narration details and the type of book I read (physical, ebook, audio). When I saw narration I mean a few different things. I will try to tell you whether it is written in 1st person or 3rd person. I will also give info about the perspectives used in the book. If I listened to the audiobook, my narration notes will pertain to the narrator used.
Sex:
This is one of those subjects that can make or break a book for someone. Some people like it and some people don't. Some people love it smutty and steamy and some people like it sweet and romantic. I personally do not care for the smutty, steamy sex but I can still handle it in some small quantity. I prefer romantic love but even that in moderation.
Language:
This is a fun one. Everyone seems to be okay with some words and not okay with others. I have made a list that seems to encompass the most common words I come upon. But keep in mind that the list has grown over time. Therefore, some reviews do not include some words and they may be in the book. I also am human so I might have miscounted so please give me grace. This is a tool you can use to determine if a word that may offend you is used to often. The final decision is up to you. Here is my list. I count all forms of the word as well (example: shit, shitty, bullshit, etc all count for "shit").
Fuck
Ass
Bitch
Shit
GD (I will not spell that one out)
Cunt/Pussy
Dick/Cock (does not include the word Penis)
Lords name in Vain (does not include GD)
-Examples: "oh my G"; when the name of Jesus is used as a term of shock or surprise
Triggers:
Life isn't fair. Life isn't equal. We all have different experiences, emotions, thoughts, and beliefs. When I list triggers on a review I do it with the mindset that some things trigger negative responses. I don't tend to have many triggers personally but there has been one occasion where I was triggered while reading. I like to put the information out there for you to make the decision that is best for you. Keep in mind I cannot know all triggers for every person. If there is something that I haven't listed on a review that you think I should consider please let me know.
Triggers:
rape
death (infant, parent, partner, etc) - only when it is a significant subject, not when merely mentioned
suicide
cancer
kidnapping/missing person
same sex themes
gore
horror
abortion
Questions:
For most of the reviews you will find questions that can be used as discussion questions for a book club. If you are not part of a book club, you can use the discussion questions to think deeper in to the novel after you are finished reading it. Some questions may have spoilers so please make sure you have read the book before reading the questions. I write all of the questions so they are all original. I write them while I am reading so sometimes you will come across a questions that is meant to be answered with the knowledge only known until that point in the book.
Example: "Who do you think the man behind bush was when Sally found the letter in her mailbox?"
Obviously, we would know the answer by the end of the book. However, this question is meant for you to share where your thoughts were at the time of reading that moment in the book.
Review:
I will provide a star review of the book and a little detailed review of what I thought. Remember this is my opinion of the book. You may have a different opinion and that is okay. My review is there as a tool to help find books you might also enjoy. I always welcome other reviews and opinions too!
